The Urban Renaissance Agency, Sustainable Food Asia K.K. ("SFA"), and REVANES Corporation ("REVANES") will open a "Machinaka Showcase" on the first floor of UR Shintora-dori Machizukuri Office ("Shintora Hut"), located on Shintora-dori (Loop Route 2), on June 12, 2023. (hereinafter "RIVANES") will open a "Machinaka Showcase" on June 12, 2023 on the first floor of the UR Shintora-dori Machizukuri Office (hereinafter "Shintoragoya") on Shintora-dori (Loop Route 2) to exhibit and introduce new ideas and services of various companies including start-ups in the food tech field.

Shintora Hut is located in the Shimbashi West Area between the Toranomon area and the Shimbashi Station area, which is being developed as a base for strengthening international competitiveness. According to the "Shinbashi/Toranomon Area Urban Development Guidelines" (hereinafter referred to as the "Guidelines") formulated by Minato City, the Shimbashi West Area is required to form a business exchange center where innovation is continuously generated by providing a place for start-ups to work, while utilizing small and medium-sized buildings. The Guidelines call for the creation of business exchange centers where innovation can continue to be born by utilizing small- and medium-sized buildings and providing places for start-ups to work.

BASED ON THESE GUIDELINES, THE UR URBAN RENAISSANCE AGENCY IS STUDYING WAYS TO CREATE A TOWN IN THE SHINBASHI/TORANOMON AREA THAT IS FULL OF "ENCOUNTERS" AND "PLACES" THAT WILL TRIGGER INNOVATION BY GATHERING STARTUPS THAT CHALLENGE TO SOLVE SOCIAL ISSUES AND NURTURING THEM THROUGHOUT THE TOWN. AS PART OF THIS EFFORT, WE WILL EXAMINE HOW TO USE THE FIRST FLOOR OF A SMALL TO MEDIUM-SIZED BUILDING IN COLLABORATION WITH SFA, WHICH WORKS WITH COMPANIES IN SOUTHEAST ASIA, INCLUDING JAPAN, TO CREATE AN ECOSYSTEM TO CREATE A FOOD INDUSTRY THAT WILL LEAD TO THE NEXT GENERATION THROUGH ALLIANCE SUPPORT AND RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE FOOD INGREDIENTS, AND WITH LIVERNESS, A KNOWLEDGE PLATFORM. WE WILL PROMOTE EXCHANGES WITH DIVERSE STAKEHOLDERS WHO SUPPORT INNOVATION WITH FOOD TECH AS A STARTING POINT.

■About Theme Setting

Food tech is a new technology in the food field that links production to processing, distribution, and consumption, as well as a business model that utilizes this technology. Investment in food tech businesses is increasing rapidly around the world as a new business model to solve social issues such as food supply and food loss in response to population growth, and to meet the diversifying needs of people who seek food. In Japan, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) has been playing a leading role in supporting the development of food tech businesses originating in Japan and promoting initiatives through industry-academia-government collaboration.

In addition, the Shinbashi/Toranomon area is characterized by its convenient access to domestic and international transportation, its proximity to Kasumigaseki, the center of policy making, and the concentration of over 1,000 restaurants in the area, which creates high demand for food and beverage throughout the day and night, especially among office workers.

In order to create a town that generates innovation, it is necessary to introduce functions that support startups, an environment that facilitates the gathering of diverse players, and mechanisms for collaboration with the local community and public-private partnerships that promote startup R&D. In considering these specific measures, it is important to set a theme. Therefore, we focused on food tech, which is expected to have affinity with the characteristics of the Shimbashi/Toranomon area.

In the operation of this facility, we will not only collaborate with those involved in the food tech field, but also with startups, and by promoting the use of the facility by local residents and workers in the area, we will examine the seeds of food tech in the Shinbashi/Toranomon area and its affinity with the local community.
